Kaiser-Walzer, Op. 437 (Emperor Waltz), is a waltz composed by Johann Strauss II in 1889. Originally titled Hand in Hand, it was created as a musical toast by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria during his visit to German Emperor Wilhelm II in August of that year. The piece symbolized a gesture of friendship from Austria-Hungary to the German Empire.
Strauss’ publisher, Fritz Simrock, suggested renaming it Kaiser-Walzer, a title that could reference either emperor. The waltz premiered in Berlin on 21 October 1889. The original piano edition cover featured an illustration of the Austrian Imperial Crown.
