The “Bridal Chorus” (German: “Treulich geführt”) is a well-known wedding march from Richard Wagners 1850 opera Lohengrin. Wagner not only composed the music but also wrote the libretto. Today, the piece is commonly played as the brides entrance music at formal weddings across the Western world.
In English-speaking countries, it is often referred to as Here Comes the Bride or simply the Wedding March. However, the term wedding march more broadly refers to any march-style music used during a wedding procession, including the famous “Wedding March” by Felix Mendelssohn, traditionally played during the recessional.
Wagners Bridal Chorus gained widespread popularity after it was featured in the 1858 wedding of Victoria, the Princess Royal, to Prince Frederick William of Prussia.
In the opera Lohengrin, the chorus is sung by the women of the wedding party after the ceremony, as they escort the heroine Elsa to her bridal chamber.
