Product Description

La traviata (Italian: [la traviˈaːta], meaning The Fallen Woman) is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi, with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La Dame aux camélias (1852), a play by Alexandre Dumas fils, which he had adapted from his own 1848 novel. The opera was originally titled Violetta, after its central character, and premiered on March 6, 1853, at La Fenice opera house in Venice.

Verdi and Piave had intended to set the opera in contemporary times, in keeping with Dumass play. However, the authorities at La Fenice required the setting to be moved to the pastaround the year 1700. It wasn’t until the 1880s that productions began to reflect Verdi and Piaves original vision, using a more realistic, modern setting.

La traviata has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas worldwide. One of its most famous pieces is the Brindisi (drinking song), a lively duet that remains a highlight of the operas first act.

This arrangement is for solo flute.
