Frédéric Chopin’s Fantaisie-Impromptu (Polish: Fantazja-Impromptu) in C♯ minor, Op. posth. 66, WN 46, was composed in 1834 and published posthumously in 1855. Despite Chopin instructing that his unpublished manuscripts remain private, the piece became one of his most frequently performed and popular compositions. Now, flutists can enjoy this iconic work in a new format.

History of Chopin’s Fantaisie-Impromptu

Chopin wrote the Fantaisie-Impromptu in 1834, the same year he composed the Four Mazurkas (Op. 17) and the Grande Valse Brillante in E♭ major (Op. 18). Unlike these works, Chopin never published the Fantaisie-Impromptu himself. After his death, Julian Fontana included it in a posthumous collection alongside Waltzes Opp. 69 and 70.

The reason Chopin withheld the piece is still debated. Some scholars, including James Huneker, criticized parts of it as “mawkish” or “without nobility.” Musicologist Ernst Oster found strong similarities between the Fantaisie-Impromptu and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, particularly the third movement, which may have influenced Chopin’s decision.

In 1960, pianist Arthur Rubinstein discovered a manuscript in the “Album of the Baroness d’Este,” proving the piece was composed for her. This suggests Chopin likely sold it as a commissioned work rather than withholding it for artistic reasons.

Flute Arrangement and Musical Insights

  • The piece opens in C♯ minor, marked allegro agitato, with the right hand originally playing rapid sixteenth notes. In the flute version, the performer navigates intricate rhythms and expressive phrasing.

  • The middle section moves to D♭ major, marked largo and moderato cantabile, offering a lyrical contrast for expressive playing.

  • The final section returns to presto in C♯ minor, ending with a gentle, fantasy-like resolution on a C♯ major chord.
