Dance of the Hours (Italian: Danza delle ore) is a short ballet that appears in the Act III finale of the opera La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli. Through a series of solo and ensemble dances, it symbolically represents different times of the day. The opera premiered in 1876 and was revised in 1880.
Eventually performed independently from the opera, Dance of the Hours became one of the most popular and frequently performed ballets of its time. Its fame grew even more after it was featured in Walt Disney’s 1940 animated film Fantasia, where it was reimagined as a humorous ballet performed by dancing ostriches, hippopotamuses, elephants, and alligators.
