Orfeo ed Euridice (Italian: [orˈfɛ.o e.d‿ewˈri.di.t͡ʃe]; French: Orphée et Eurydice; English: Orpheus and Eurydice) is an opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the Greek myth of Orpheus. The libretto was written by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi, and the work belongs to the genre of azione teatrale—a form of opera focused on mythological themes, featuring choruses and dance.
The opera premiered on October 5, 1762, at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with Empress Maria Theresa in attendance. Orfeo ed Euridice was the first of Gluck’s “reform operas,” a movement that aimed to simplify the convoluted plots and elaborate musical style of opera seria, instead emphasizing what Gluck called “noble simplicity” in both music and drama.
This opera remains Gluck’s most popular work and has significantly influenced later German operas. Its core theme—a descent into the underworld and a hero’s emotional restraint—echoes in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Beethoven’s Fidelio, and Wagner’s Das Rheingold.
Though originally composed to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice incorporates many elements of French opera, such as accompanied recitative and a reduced focus on vocal virtuosity. In 1774, Gluck revised the opera for French audiences at the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. With a new libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline, this version—titled Orphée et Eurydice—included changes in vocal roles and orchestration to suit French tastes.
In Act II, Scene 2, the setting shifts to Elysium. The original 1762 production included a brief ballet here, which Gluck expanded in the 1774 version into the now-famous four-movement Dance of the Blessed Spirits, featuring a prominent solo flute part. The version referenced here is a simplified arrangement of that flute solo.
