Act II – The Land of Sweets
Clara and the Prince arrive in the enchanting Land of Sweets, ruled in his absence by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince recounts how Clara saved him from the Mouse King, breaking the spell and restoring him to his true form. In celebration of Clara’s bravery, the Sugar Plum Fairy presents a dazzling display of dances from around the world: Spanish chocolate, Arabian coffee, Chinese tea, and Russian candy canes all perform in her honor. Shepherdesses playing flutes dance the delicate Danse des Mirlitons (Dance of the Reed Pipes).
Mother Ginger appears next, with her Polichinelle children tumbling out from beneath her enormous skirt to dance. A graceful waltz of flowers follows, leading into the grand pas de deux by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.
The festivities end with a final waltz performed by all the sweets. The Sugar Plum Fairy then bids Clara and the Prince farewell, guiding them to a sleigh drawn by reindeer. As they wave goodbye, the subjects of the Land of Sweets cheerfully wave back.
In the original 1892 libretto, the ballet’s apotheosis depicts a giant beehive guarded by buzzing bees, protecting their golden treasures. Like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker has inspired numerous reinterpretations and alternative endings in later productions.
This arrangement is for solo flute.
