Product Description

“Air on the G String,” also known as “Air for G String” or “Celebrated Air,” is an arrangement created in 1871 by violinist August Wilhelmj. It is based on the second movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068.

Wilhelmj’s arrangement transposes the original first violin part down so it can be played entirely on the violin’s lowest string—the G string—which gives the piece its name. In this version, the melody is typically performed by a single violinist rather than by the entire first violin section.
