Ave Maria Bach/Gounod
“Ave Maria” is a musical setting of the traditional Latin prayer, originally published in 1853 under the title Méditation sur le 1er prélude de piano de S. Bach. The piece features a lyrical melody composed by French Romantic composer Charles Gounod, which he layered over a slightly modified version of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I (1722).
While the original 1853 publication included French text, it was the 1859 version—set to the Latin words of the Ave Maria—that gained widespread popularity and became one of the most well-known adaptations of the prayer in classical music.
