Whether you’re just beginning your musical journey or returning to the flute after a break, your first flute lesson sets the tone for everything to come. At Music Makers for Life in Crystal Lake, Illinois, I work with students of all ages and levels—from complete beginners to advanced flutists. Each lesson is personalized and designed to help students learn flute in a way that fits their goals, experience, and learning style.
For Beginner Flute Students
If you’re brand new to the instrument, your beginner flute lesson will likely start with a look at the flute fingering chart, posture, how to properly assemble the flute, and basic breathing techniques. We’ll go over your first few notes, using Book 1 of the Standard of Excellence Band Method by Bruce Pearson, which comes with clear exercises and flute sheet music ideal for learning to play flute right from the start.
You’ll also begin your journey into flute scales and tone development, which are essential for strong technique. I’ll introduce you to simple etudes flute studies and even give you a brief introduction to music theory concepts that are important for reading music and playing with expression.
For Intermediate Flute Students
If you’ve had some experience, our first lesson will include an assessment of your current level. We’ll review your tone, scales, and reading fluency to determine the right place to continue. Many intermediate flutists begin exploring solo pieces, flute duos, and may even learn to play the piccolo. We’ll also look at Rubank method books or similar materials to push your skills further.
Expect to dive deeper into expressive playing, etudes, and more challenging sheet music. Students often begin preparing solo sonatas or ensemble pieces for performance. I also offer help with custom arrangements for students interested in playing specific songs they love.
For Advanced Flute Students
Advanced players should bring a prepared piece to the first lesson if possible. We’ll explore advanced etudes flute sheet exercises such as those from Berbiguier, Andersen, or Marcel Moyse, and refine your tone, vibrato, breath support, and musicality. Our work may include preparing audition materials or difficult repertoire and exploring advanced flute lesson strategies.
Many advanced students also continue developing their piccolo playing, which is essential for orchestral or marching settings. I can also coach students on creating personal goals such as entering competitions, participating in masterclasses, or creating flute videos and recordings.
Every student is unique, and my goal is to support your musical growth in a positive, engaging environment. Whether you’re interested in performing, composing, or just enjoying the process of learning, you’ll receive high-quality flute lessons tailored to your needs—plus opportunities to perform in our seasonal recitals and grow at your own pace.
